Knowing The Difference Between A Semi-Acoustic Guitar And Acoustic Electric Guitar
There are plenty of confusions which are linked with the topic of acoustic electric and semi-acoustic guitars. Plenty of people are misusing these two terms.
So, just what exactly is an acoustic electric guitar and exactly how is it completely different from a semi-acoustic guitar? For those who are interested in guitars, it helps to be aware what the differences between the two are.
The acoustic guitar is hollow. The space that is hollow is called the soundbox which acts to enhance the vibration of the strings that make the well-known sound which is widely used in folk and country music. On the other hand, in an electric, the signal is created by the vibration of the strings over a magnetic pickup. An electric circuitry that is placed inside an amplifier then increases the signal.
Both acoustic electric and semi-acoustic guitars fall somewhere in the middle of electric and acoustic amplification.
Primarily, an acoustic electric is an acoustic guitar that has been added with electronics so that it can be plugged into an amplifier. For some part, it looks, play and sound like the typical acoustic guitar. It's a totally operational acoustic guitar used with an electric pickup, a transducer or simply a microphone. Employing a microphone or a transducer is a necessity with regards to a musical instrument which has nylon strings because a pickup doesn't recognize vibrations from non metallic materials. The signals from microphone will then be fed to the amplifier which in turn will boost it the same way with an electronic instrument.
Often referred to as a hollow body guitar, a semi-acoustic guitar has the body which is the same as that of an electric guitar. In simple terms, it's an electric guitar having a body that's partially or fully hollow. It can also be enjoyed unamplified due to its hollowed body, however it can't generate that much of a volume so it’s not often used like that. The reason behind the hollow body is that it provides a tone for your guitar that cannot be obtained using a guitar that features a solid body.
With more experience, being able to choose whether a guitar is under the semi-acoustic or acoustic electric classification can be fairly easy. In case the guitar looks like an acoustic but can be connected, then it is an acoustic electric guitar. On the other hand, if the guitar appears like an electric guitar but contains a hollow body, then it’s a semi-acoustic guitar.
