Blues Legends and the tools of their trade
Each and every guitar student has a half dozen or so great guitar masters that they love to draw from their styles.
Given the amazing number of variables at play when generating sound from an electric guitar, copying a particular player exactly is next to impossible.
The amplifiers they use, individual tone settings on the guitar pickups, even the guage of strings and even perhaps the way they tune their guitar – all these variables go towards creating the unique sound that a great player generates.
When it comes to the blues and unique sounds, the two most notable guitarists that spring to mind are BB King and John Lee Hooker.
A particularly fantastic guitar that is generally connected to BB King is the Epiphone BB King Lucille produced originally by Gibson. The guitar is an absolutely beautiful piece and has some cool features for changing the tone mid way through a song.
BB King is the penultimate performer playing to audiences in most years, nearly every night of the week, and the man is well into his 70’s.
You can’t help but be inspired by his commitment to the blues tradition and to his avid fans all over the globe. What a fine example for all of us average-joe players out there who dream of being able to play in the limelight just that one time!
Another great guitar I want to put up for consideration is the Epiphone Sheraton II – a favorite of John Lee Hooker in the mid 60’s .
John Lee lived the legendary life of a blues player – born to poor sharecroppers in the deep south, he worked and played guitar through the depression era, WWII, and started to make recordings in the late 40’s. Featuring in the movie “The Blues Brothers” was a change from his guitar performances and he really reached international fame with his hit album “The Healer” released in the late 1970’s. The legend John Lee passed away in 2001 and he left behind an extensive legacy of his particular Delta Blues style.
An acoustic guitar was John Lee’s preferred guitar in the early part of his career, then he moved to an electric guitar when he moved to Chicago, and in the 1960’s changed to the Epiphone Sheraton II guitar.
Replica guitars, being those that are copies of guitars used by past guitar legends are generally of excellent quality given they bear the name of a great player.
Having a chance to own a guitar replica of a master guitarists gives all of us the opportunity to own our own piece of history.
