Great Practicality And Versatility – Why So Many Choose A Hybrid Bike
Why is it that hybrid bikes appeal to so many? Essentially a hybrid combines those features of mountain and road bikes that most appeal to the leisure cyclist. Those who do most of their riding on the road find the wide knobbly tyres and small frame of a true mountain bike hard work. The other side of the coin is that the narrow tyres and characteristic riding position of a road bike don't suit those who want to venture onto the tracks and trails.
So, what does this compromise look like?
- All have flat handlebars. Far more comfortable for everyday leisure cycling than drop bars. It's easier to change hand position regularly for comfort and thickly padded grips absorb shocks.
- Semi slick tyres, the width being somewhere between road and MTB tyres. These produce a great combination of low resistance for road speed, together with enough grip for ventures off the beaten track. Wheels are usually 700 mm diameter road rims instead of 26" MTB wheels.
- Either a beefed-up road frame, or an extended MTB frame, depending on what the designer wants to achieve. Frames are usually aluminium, but you can go to carbon if you have the resources. You can often find suspension forks - great for rough roads. There is often a choice of mens or womens models.
- The gears are designed with low ratios for hillclimbing together with high ratios for covering the miles on the road.
But, there is a problem because no compromise can ever be perfect. So you have to decide on what type of hybrid to go for, depending on where you will be doing most of your riding.
Those who really like the MTB look and will be doing plenty of cycling over rough ground will probably appreciate the Cannondale Bad Boy range. Off-road performance is enhanced by the MTB frames and the 26" wheels and disc brakes featured on most models.
Others who feel that most of their riding will be on the road – the commute to work or out and about at the weekend might prefer the Specialized Sirrus or the Scott Sportster ranges. These bikes will feature more road bike components, together with narrower tyres on 700 mm road wheels for speed. For really covering easy miles on the tarmac, these bikes will be a far better bet.
So the choices are available, whatever your style of riding. For the cyclist who just wants to get out and about, there's little doubt that a hybrid has the most to offer.
