Frequently Asked Questions...
Is it Normal for a Lava Lamp's Colors to Fade?
I have a lava lamp that's around ten years old or so. For years, I kept it in a basement and rarely used it; but I moved it about a year ago and now turn it on between two to three hours every night. Originally, the liquid was dark blue and the "lava" bright green. But now, the liquid is almost clear and the "lava" yellow. Is this normal (and due to more frequent usage) or is something wrong with my lava lamp? Thanks!
Answer:
Completely normal, just comes with time and age. Think of it like the sun beating on something and how the color fades. It's the same principal. Even though it's only a light bulb heating it up, it's still very bright and in direct proximity to both the "water" and the "lava". It warms the water, which diminishes the color over time and "bleaches" the color of the lava which is really just a wax derivative. The water is actually a chemical combination called tetrachloride and is susceptible to constant exposure to any light source. If you kept it on a window sill, the sun would do the same thing to it, only faster! Like anything else, it fades over time when exposed to a light source.
